Autumn / Winter Season 2006

Gilbert and Sullivan's Lost Empires

Friday 3rd November • 7.30pm
Tickets £15 - £4.50

This is the story of Gilbert and Sullivan’s world - the world of the Victorian theatre. Join us on an evening of discovery and entertainment with David Wilmore, John Ayldon, Patricia Leonard and ex-members of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company to unravel the backstage story of the Victorian theatre.

Delight at stories from the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company’s Northeast tours. Did they do all those spectacular effects at the Georgian Theatre Royal during the nineteenth century? Why did so many theatres burn down with such alarming regularity? Learn the secrets, hear the gossip, and see archive footage. The curtain rises on a long forgotten world, a bygone age when the world was young and the superb music of Gilbert and Sullivan rang out across The Empire, The Palaces and The Hippodromes.
