Spring 2008
Richmond School
in association with the Georgian Theatre Royal
presents
Doctor Faustus and The Bacchae
Wednesday 19th March
Time: 7.30pm
Tickets: £6
AS-Level Drama students bring to life a glittering pair of plays, written
two thousand years apart but equally compelling. Each drama depicts an
arrogant man who defies divine powers, with shocking results.
In Marlowe’s
play of 1604, the sorcerer Faust sells his soul to the Devil, trading
virtue for sensuous excess. In Euripides’ tragedy of 404BC, by
contrast, an uptight ruler represses ecstatic rituals and pays the price
to the god of sensuality, Dionysus. From the seven deadly sins to the
wildest hedonism, Richmond School’s Performing Arts specialism
is on vivid display in these two dark masterpieces.
