Built by actor-manager Samuel Butler in 1788, the Georgian Theatre Royal
was managed by Butler along with his circuit of theatres at Beverley,
Harrogate, Kendal, Northallerton, Ulverston and Whitby.
As Britain’s most complete Georgian playhouse, we invite you to
take a tour of the theatre, led by one of our informative, entertaining
guides. Tours provide a comprehensive look at the theatre’s history
and encompass all areas of the historic building. Tours conclude in the
exhibition space, which boasts Britain’s oldest scenery - ‘The
Woodland Scene’ -painted on canvas between 1818 and 1836.
Tours commence every hour from 10am to 4pm from Monday to Saturday.
For groups of 10 or more, contact the Admin Office on 01748 823710 or send an email to find out more.
